![]() The clicker is more distinct, and since I’m doing so many repetitions, it’s easier to use a clicker. With Service Dog training and with young puppies, I use a clicker. ⠀ ⠀ With most pet dog training, I use a verbal “yes” as the marker. It communicates to the dog that whatever they were doing in that exact moment (when they received the mark), was the correct behavior. Once he understand that the marker means a food reward is coming, we can begin using the marker during training.⠀ ⠀ A marker is a word/tool that we use during the learning stage. Since Hudson is just starting out, and doesn’t know much of anything, the first thing I did was introduce the marker (clicker). At this age, I use positive reinforcement to teach a puppy their basic commands. His owners are out of town, and wanted Hudson to get a jumpstart on his basic training.⠀ ⠀ Hudson is only 14 weeks old. Young puppies need to get used to being solo, and spending a good amount of time alone in a crate can help prevent unhealthy separation anxiety had a great first day of training during his “board and learn” stay. Use some fun crate games to help him or her create a positive association. You’ll also want to help your puppy get used to being in a crate. I also recommend getting your puppy on a food, water and relieving schedule, which will help with housebreaking. Start basic house behavior training like crate training, housebreaking and waiting politely for food right away. Training a puppy starts the day you bring him or her home – which, for most people, is when your puppy is between 8 and 10 weeks old. This time, we’ll talk puppy training and how to choose the dog training technique that’s right for you. ![]() Last time, we broke down four big benefits of training your dog. We live differently with our dogs than we used to – and the more we include them in our social lives, the more important it is for us to have a strong bond and good communication with them. There’s a lot more to loving and living with dogs in Charlotte than hopping dog-friendly breweries or taking pet pictures with Santa (though we’re here for those, too). ![]()
